AI in Healthcare: Diagnosing Diseases with Deep Learning
AI in Healthcare: Saving Lives with Code
AI is not just about writing code or essays. It is tackling the hardest problem of all: Human Biology.
1. Radiology and Imaging
Radiologists look at thousands of X-rays. Fatigue sets in. AI models (CNNs) can detect anomalies (tumors, fractures) with superhuman accuracy.
- Google Health has shown AI systems that outperform human radiologists in detecting breast cancer.
2. Protein Folding (AlphaFold)
Understanding how proteins fold is key to curing diseases. It used to take months. DeepMind's AlphaFold solved the 50-year-old "Protein Folding Problem", predicting the 3D structure of nearly all known proteins. This accelerates drug discovery by years.
3. Medical LLMs (Med-PaLM)
General LLMs (GPT-4) are bad at medicine (hallucinations). Med-PaLM is fine-tuned on medical journals and exams. It was the first AI to pass the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE).
Conclusion
AI will not replace doctors. But doctors who use AI will replace those who don't.
